Independent living · Eureka Springs, Arkansas

An old stone hotel, and every evening still ahead of you.

Independent living for people who would rather walk down to a concert in the park than spend another winter keeping up a house on a hill.

Since 2011

We kept the ballroom. We added the elevator.

The building went up in 1907 as a boarding hotel for people who came to take the waters. When we bought it, the plaster was falling and the ballroom floor had a tree growing through it. We spent three years putting it back together, room by room, and opened as Basin Hill Residences in the fall of 2011.

Now thirty-eight people call it home. Most of them moved here from bigger houses with steeper driveways. They keep their own apartments and their own calendars, and on Friday nights a good many of them end up in the ballroom, where somebody always talks the piano player into one more song.

Kind words, kept

Mother told us she wanted somewhere with a little romance left in it. I thought she was joking until the first Friday night, when she danced with a retired band teacher and came home at ten-thirty.

We had forty-two steps up to our old front door. Here I take the elevator down, walk four minutes and I'm at the park with an ice cream. My knees thank Celeste daily.
