How it started

Lupe wanted a place she would pick for her own mother. So she built it.

Lupe Hoffmann was a home health aide in Washington County for eleven years. She saw too many people leave homes they loved for buildings that felt like airports. In 2007 she and her husband Ray bought a rambling 1950s ranch house, added a wing of bedrooms and a wide porch, and opened Bluebonnet Cottage.

Today we care for twelve residents with a staff who mostly grew up within twenty miles of here. We know the pastors, the pharmacists and the waitresses at the café on Alamo Street. Every April we load up the van and drive the back roads to Chappell Hill to see the bluebonnets, and every summer we find a reason to go get ice cream.

Daddy grumbled about leaving the farm for about a week. Now he runs the domino table and tells Ray how to fix the van.

They called me before the doctor did when Mom's blood pressure was off. That is when I stopped worrying.

My grandmother speaks Spanish most of the day now. Half the staff answers her in Spanish, and she lights up.

The bluebonnet drive photos they sent us are on our refrigerator. Mom is smiling in every single one.

Good to know

Questions, answered

What is a Type B assisted living home?

Texas licenses assisted living as Type A or Type B. Type B homes like ours have staff awake at night and can care for residents who need help to leave the building in an emergency or who need help with transfers. We are not a nursing home, so we do not provide round-the-clock skilled nursing.

How do families pay?

Most residents pay privately or with long-term care insurance. Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance. Some Texas Medicaid waiver programs help with assisted living costs for people who qualify; ask our office what may apply to you.

Can residents keep their own doctor?

Yes. We drive residents to their own doctors in Brenham and coordinate with any home health or hospice agency the family chooses.

Do you have a waiting list?

Sometimes. With only twelve rooms, call early and we will be honest about timing. We keep a short list and call in order.
