Supper is at five-thirty. Come early.

Twenty private rooms in a 1920s home a block off the Clay County square, with caregivers up all night and a nurse who has run the place for twenty-two years.

Since 1987

A house that grew up with the town.

Mabry House was a family home for sixty years before Nell Mabry, a retired school nurse, opened it to eight neighbors who could no longer live alone. We have added a sunroom and a twelve-room wing since then, but the front parlor, the pocket doors and the long dining table are the same ones she started with.

Most of the people who live here grew up in Clay County. They know the cook's mother, they still get the Henrietta paper, and on Sundays half of them are picked up for church by grandchildren. We keep it that way on purpose.

From Clay County families

My mother taught third grade in Henrietta for thirty years. At Mabry House, half the aides were her students. She gets called Mrs. Carter all day long and she loves it.

We looked at the big places in Wichita Falls. Dad would have been fine there, but here he can still walk to the barbershop. That settled it.

Lorena called me at work to say Mom hadn't finished her lunch two days running. It turned out to be a tooth. Nobody else would have noticed that fast.
