A silver-haired resident couple sharing a slow dance, her head on his shoulder

Assisted living · Nacogdoches, Texas

Saturday nights, the parlor rug rolls back.

Thirty-two apartments in Texas's oldest town, a camellia garden that blooms in February, and help with the hard parts of the day so the good parts get your full attention.

A house with manners

We still dress for Sunday dinner.

Camellia House opened in 1996 in a white-columned home on North Mound Street, and some customs came with the building: linen on the dining tables, a piano that gets played every evening, and a parlor where the furniture is pushed to the walls on Saturday nights so anyone who wants to can dance.

Behind the manners is real care. Our nurse writes every plan with the resident and family, caregivers are awake and on the halls all night, and medications are handled with the same attention our cook gives the Sunday roast.

Letters from families

Mama won a jitterbug contest in 1952 and has told us about it every year since. At Camellia House she finally has people who want to see her do it.

The Sunday dinners undid me. White tablecloths, rolls from scratch, Daddy in his good tie. It felt like my grandmother's table.
Marcus O.Son of a resident
When Mother's medication changed twice in a month, the nurse called me both times before the first new dose. That told me everything.
Laurie F.Daughter of a resident
I am ninety-one and I have a dance card again. Write that down.
Opal H.Resident since 2021
They planted a camellia outside Dad's window because he grew them for forty years. He waters it himself.
