Most have been here more than ten years. They know every resident by name and by story.
24/7Memory care in McPherson since 1926
Grange Hill opened as a home for retired farm families in 1926. Today it cares for 44 people living with dementia, still in the brick house on the hill, still run by the same community.
A hometown institution
In 1925 the farmers of McPherson County pooled their wheat money to build a home on the hill for neighbors who could no longer work their land. My great-grandfather laid the brick. The house opened the next spring with eleven residents and a milk cow.
A century later, we care only for people living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, but the idea hasn't changed. The people who live here are our neighbors: the wheat farmers, schoolteachers, mechanics and church organists who built this county. We know their families, their congregations and often their grandchildren. We treat them the way the founders asked us to: as if the hill still belonged to them. In a way, it does.

My grandmother lived here in 1971, my mother in 1998, and now my aunt. Same hill, same kindness.
Mom canned peaches every August for sixty years. Last summer she was in the Grange Hill kitchen, peeling peaches with her sleeves rolled up.
Dad doesn't know what year it is, but he still knows every word of 'Children of the Heavenly Father' in Swedish.
Ruth Ann took care of my father in 2003. Now she takes care of my mother. She remembered Dad's favorite pie.
The harvest drive is the one day Grandpa talks the whole time. He tells us which fields were his.
They labeled every one of Mom's old photographs with her. Now we have names for faces we'd never known.
Emily walked us through the KanCare application step by step. We'd been dreading it for a year.
My wife's quilt square is in this year's baby quilt. She doesn't remember making it. I'll never forget it.
Sunday dinner at Grange Hill is the best meal in McPherson. I'm not exaggerating.
When Dad passed, Pastor Brooks and three caregivers were with him. They called us first thing and stayed until we arrived.
