Good to know

Questions, answered

Is Grange Hill still a nonprofit?

Grange Hill has been community-owned since 1926 and is governed by a volunteer board of McPherson County residents.

What does memory care include here?

Care from dementia-trained staff around the clock, nurse oversight, medication management, meals, housekeeping, laundry and a full calendar, all for one monthly rate.

How is memory care paid for?

Most families pay privately or with long-term care insurance. Medicare covers doctor visits and therapy but not room and board. Some Kansans qualify for KanCare (Medicaid) waiver services, and veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA pension benefits. Our social worker can help.

Is the building secure?

Yes. Doors are coded and alarmed, and the courtyard is walled. Residents walk freely and safely indoors and out.

Can my mother help in the kitchen?

Yes. The canning kitchen and baking days are staffed and set up for safety, and residents choose how much they want to do.

Is the old house accessible?

The 1926 house has an elevator, ramps and widened doorways added during our 1994 renovation.

Do you offer short stays?

When a room is available, yes. Respite stays give family caregivers a rest.

How do you handle sundowning?

We plan the late afternoon with care: hymns, a walk through the old house, a snack and a familiar face. Most residents settle with routine rather than medication.

What happens if needs increase?

We update the care plan and coordinate hospice so most residents never have to leave the hill.

Can we bring furniture?

Please do. Favorite chairs, quilts and photographs make a room home.

Can residents attend their own church?

Many do, with family. We also host chapel every Sunday with local clergy.

Do you allow pets?

Calm, vaccinated cats and small dogs may sometimes move in with their person. Ask us.

What are visiting hours?

Any time. Sunday dinner at noon is a favorite.

How do families stay informed?

Our nurse calls whenever anything changes, and the Grange Hill Gazette arrives every month.

Do you hire locally?

Almost entirely. Many of our caregivers grew up in McPherson County.

Can we see the old house?

Of course. Every tour starts in the 1926 parlor.

There's always pie on the hill.

Call the office or ask for Karl by name. Most of McPherson already knows the way.
