Adult day center · Brenham, Texas · since 1989
Thirty-five years of good weekdays in the old school gym.
A licensed adult day center for Washington County grown-ups who should not spend the day alone. A nurse on duty, hot dinner at noon, forty-two at every table and a van ride home.
How it started
The church ladies needed a room. The school board had a gym.
In 1989 the women of the Methodist circle were taking turns sitting with friends who could not be left alone. When Hackberry School closed, they asked the board for the gym, painted the bleachers and opened the doors to eleven members.
We still keep the hardwood floor and the old scoreboard. Members still play forty-two after dinner, and most of our staff grew up in this county. What changed is the nursing, the van and the kitchen, which now cooks for sixty every weekday.
— Dolores Vrana, RN, director since 2004

Families around the county
Daddy farmed outside Burton for fifty years. He would not hear of a nursing home, and I could not leave him alone with the stove. The Hall gave him a table of men who still argue about rain.
My wife has been going three days a week since her stroke. The nurse called me at work once because her color was off. She was right, and we caught it early.
I bring my grandmother on Mondays and pick her up with a plate of kolaches in her lap. She tells everyone it is her job.
