The brick house on Maple Row at dusk, its red maple glowing in the front yard

Chapter 01 — East Center Avenue, near Spring Park, Searcy, AR

Residential care · Searcy, Arkansas

Every fall the maples turn red, and we are still here.

A licensed residential care home for ten on a street of old maples near Spring Park. The same caregivers through all four seasons, and a kitchen that smells like cornbread.

Chapter one · How it began

A house on Maple Row, and a promise to Mama.

Annette Pruitt's mother made her promise two things: never put me somewhere that smells like bleach, and make sure somebody brushes my hair. In 2001, after her mother's stroke, Annette bought the brick ranch on Maple Row with a nurse's savings and kept both promises. Her mother lived here six years. Nine other residents lived here with her.

Twenty-five years later, the house has ten private rooms, a screened porch, a garden full of zinnias and a staff that mostly stays for good. The promises have not changed. The hair still gets brushed.

Sample family reviews

Families, in their own words

The first thing I noticed was that Mama's hair was brushed and pinned the way she always wore it. They asked me how she liked it on day one.
