Our story

How we got here

The people, the place and the promise behind every day of care.

Our story

Thirty years on the canyon road

Two residents sitting on the rim to watch the sun go down
A volunteer walking alongside a resident in his wheelchair
A resident carving wood in the campus woodshop
A couple sharing lunch by the window
A couple with their grandchildren on the apartment sofa
Golden evening light on the badlands at the edge of the canyon
Chapter 01

Forty acres of wheat ground

In 1995 Ed and Wanda Kittrell sold forty acres of their family's wheat ground on the canyon road to a group of local churches and doctors who wanted a decent place for Panhandle folks to retire close to home. The first twenty-four apartments opened in the fall of 1996.

Chapter 02

The casitas

Residents kept asking for a garage and a yard they didn't have to mow. In 2003 we built the first eight garden casitas along the east fence. There are thirty-two now, and a waiting list for the ones facing the sunset.

Chapter 03

Adding care

When our first residents started needing a hand, we added assisted living in 2007 so nobody would have to leave the people they ate supper with. In 2012 the Mesquite House opened for memory care.

Chapter 04

Amarillo and Hereford

Families in Amarillo asked us to come to them, and we opened a second campus in 2009. Hereford followed in 2017, in a building that used to be a grain company office and still has the old scale in the lobby.

Chapter 05

The people who stay

Our head cook has been here twenty-seven years. Ramona started at the front desk. Half our nurses trained at the college down the road. People stay here, and residents notice.

Chapter 06

What's next

We're adding a second pool, eight more casitas and a covered pavilion out by the garden, all planned with a committee of residents who have very strong opinions about shade.

Come for Sunday lunch. Stay for the sunset.

Call or text Marisol to set a time, or pick one online. Bring the whole family; the chicken-fried steak is worth the drive from Lubbock.
