The Craftsman house at dusk, its windows lit, with the garden path leading to the front porch

Residential care · Eureka Springs, Arkansas

The porch light is always on at Rosemary House.

Ten residents in a 1912 Craftsman house off the Historic Loop. Lamplit suppers, a parlor piano, and caregivers awake in the house through every night.

A house with a long memory

Built in 1912 for a doctor's family. Still full of one.

The Rosemary House has been a home for older adults since 1996, when Celeste Ambrose's mother converted the old Pruett place into ten bedrooms with a lift chair on the grand stair. The cedar shingles and deep front porch are original. So is the parlor fireplace that still gets lit every evening from October to April.

What we offer is simple and hard to find: the same caregivers, a cook who plates supper like company is coming, and a house quiet enough that you can hear the spring rain on the tin porch roof. Residents get help with whatever the day asks of them, and nothing they can still do for themselves gets taken away.

Sample family reviews

Families who know the porch

Mother taught piano for forty years. The first night at Rosemary House she played for the whole parlor, and she has not missed a Friday since.
Jeanne P.Daughter of a resident
I drive over from Rogers on Sundays and always stay for supper. They set a place for me without being asked.
Martin H.Son of a resident
We looked at four places. This was the only one where the caregiver giving the tour knew every resident's grandchildren by name.

Good to know

Questions, answered

What is a residential care home?

It is a small licensed home where staff help with daily needs like bathing, dressing, meals and medications. In Arkansas these homes are licensed by the state, and ours is inspected like any other licensed facility. It is not a nursing home, so residents who need round-the-clock skilled nursing would need a different setting.

How do you handle the stairs in an old house?

The bedrooms on the second floor are served by a stair lift, and three bedrooms are on the main floor with no steps at all. The side porch entrance is level with the drive.

How is the monthly rate paid?

Most of our residents pay privately, sometimes with help from long-term care insurance. Some veterans and surviving spouses qualify for VA Aid and Attendance benefits. Ask our office and we will walk you through what may apply.

Can my mother bring her own furniture?

Please do. Her own bed, her own chair and the quilt from home make the first weeks much easier. We provide a bed if she would rather not move one.

What happens if care needs grow?

Many residents stay with us through the end of life, with a hospice team visiting. If someone needs more nursing than we can safely give, we help the family find the right next place and make the move gently.

Supper is at half past five. Families are welcome at the table any night; just call the kitchen by noon.

Come for supper and stay for the piano.

Evening tours are our favorite. You will see the house the way residents know it: lamps on, table set, someone at the keys.
