Adult day health · Plaza District, OKC
Sixteenth Street is a licensed adult day health center in a 1940s garage on the Plaza: nurses on the floor, therapy on site, a real kitchen, and hours built for families who work shifts.
Why we built it
Marcus Okonkwo spent eleven years as a charge nurse at a hospital downtown. Half his coworkers were caring for a parent at home and juggling it around twelve-hour shifts. The day programs they could find opened at eight and closed at four. So in 2016 he leased an old auto garage on 16th Street, put in glass doors, a nurses' station, a kitchen and a shower suite, and set the hours by the hospital shift schedule.
Today sixty members come through on a busy day: retired teachers and aircraft mechanics, grandmothers who still run the family recipes, veterans, artists from the neighborhood. Some are living with dementia, some are recovering from a stroke, some just should not be alone. All of them get a full day with nurses, real food and people who expect them.

Rooms & suites
One big open floor, and three rooms built for the parts of the day that need them.

Six thousand square feet of open, daylit space under the old garage trusses: tables, a stage, a walking track and the nurses' station in the middle.

Low light, soft chairs and books for members who need a break from the noise, or a nap.

A roll-in shower, heated floor and a trained aide, so bath day is one less job at home.

Sample family reviews
I work nights at the VA. I drop Dad off at 6:40 on my way home and sleep. That is not a small thing. That is my whole life working.
My mother painted in the Thursday studio with an artist whose work I've seen in galleries. She brought home a canvas and hung it herself.
Kevin had Dad walking the taped track with a cane by Christmas. In September he was in a wheelchair.
Gloria walked us through the waiver application in one afternoon. We'd been stuck for months.
My husband was a mechanic for forty years. He likes that it was a garage. He tells people he's 'back at the shop.'
The Saturday program is the only reason I can still work weekends at the store.
They noticed Mom's breathing was off before lunch, called me and called her cardiologist. She was in and out of the clinic the same day.
For families
How the day works for the people at home.
Drop off from 6:30 a.m., pick up by 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays 8 to 3. Tell us your schedule and we'll build the van run around it.
Every afternoon you get a note through the family app or on paper: meals, vitals, mood and anything our nurses noticed.
Send day-time doses in the pharmacy bottle. Our nurses log every one and flag refills before you run out.
Text the front desk by 7 a.m. if your member is staying home. Hospital stays never cost you a spot.
Insurance & payment
Our social worker checks every option with you before the first day. These are the most common.
