Chapter 01 — North of Honor Heights Park, Muskogee, OK

Adult day health · Muskogee, Oklahoma

Seven in the morning to five-thirty. Every hour counts.

A licensed adult day health center where members get nursing, therapy and a hot lunch, and their families get to go to work without worrying.

7:00 a.m.

The van pulls up, and the day starts.

Our drivers know which members like the front seat and which ones want to be picked up last so they can finish their coffee. By eight, the big room smells like biscuits and somebody has started a domino game.

Between then and the ride home, there is a nurse check, chair exercise, physical therapy for those who need it, lunch at round tables, a long afternoon of whatever people love best, and a snack before the van. Families get a note at pickup about how the day went.

— Ellen Tsosie-Barker, RN, center director

What families tell us

After Mom's stroke, I thought a nursing home was the only answer. Two Rivers gave her therapy three days a week and gave me my job back. She's walking to the mailbox again.

My husband was a deacon for forty years. He leads the Thursday Bible study now. He tells people he's on staff.
Bernice J.Wife of a member
Mr. Dale drives the morning van. Daddy will not let me take him myself anymore because he would miss their talk about the Sooners.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Who is adult day health a good fit for?

Adults who live at home with family but shouldn't be alone all day: people recovering from a stroke, living with early or middle-stage dementia, Parkinson's, diabetes that needs watching, or simple loneliness. We do an in-home assessment before the first day.

How do families pay?

Most of our members use a Medicaid home and community-based waiver, VA benefits or long-term care insurance. Others pay privately by the day. Medicare generally does not pay for adult day services. Our business office will help you sort out what you qualify for.

Can my dad come only a few days a week?

Yes. Two days is the minimum we recommend, so members get to know the people at their table. Most families settle into three or four.

What if something happens during the day?

A registered nurse is on site every hour we are open. We call you for anything unusual, and we call 911 first in an emergency, just as you would at home.
