A grandmother hugging her grandson at a golden-hour supper in the courtyard

Chapter 01 — East side, a block off Highway 54, Pratt, KS

Senior living · Pratt, Kansas

The harvest is in. Come on home to Wheatland.

Independent and assisted living apartments on the east side of Pratt, with Sunday dinner at long tables and the same faces at the nurses' station year after year.

Since 1971

Four churches, a co-op and one good idea.

In 1971 four Pratt congregations and the grain co-op pooled money so the county's retired farmers wouldn't have to move to Wichita to grow old. They built twenty-four apartments on a quarter block of Ninnescah Street and called it Wheatland. Half the town showed up for the ribbon cutting.

We've grown to sixty-two apartments, added assisted living in 1998 and a sunroom that faces west so residents can watch the weather roll in. What hasn't changed is the board: neighbors, still. They answer to Pratt, not to a company in another state.

What families tell us

Dad farmed north of town for fifty years. He moved here grumbling and now he's the one telling new residents which table gets the best view of the storms.
Janelle W.Daughter of a resident
Mom moved from independent to assisted living last spring and only had to move down the hall. Same friends at lunch, same nurse. That was everything to us.
Kurt S.Son of a resident
Rosa sat at our kitchen table and went through the long-term care policy line by line. We'd had it for twenty years and never understood it.
Peggy and Don L.Residents since 2022
Sunday fried chicken. That's my review.
Harold V.Resident since 2019
I live four hours away in Kansas City. Gloria calls me after every doctor visit without being asked, and I get the newsletter with Mom's quilt in it.
Diane F.Daughter of a resident
I was alone on the farm after Earl passed. Here I eat with six women I've known since grade school. We're louder than the men's table.
Wilma R.Resident since 2021
They let Grandpa keep his old feed-store chair in his apartment. It doesn't match anything. He's never been happier.

Insurance & payment

Paying for senior living

Money questions come first for most families. Here's the honest picture.

Private pay

Most residents pay monthly from savings, pensions, Social Security or the sale of a home. No entrance fee, a thirty-day notice and a written agreement.

Long-term care insurance

Many policies cover assisted living care. We'll help you file the claim and send the monthly paperwork your insurer asks for.

KanCare (Kansas Medicaid)

The Frail Elderly waiver may help cover assisted living care services for people who qualify. It doesn't cover room and board. Ask about our KanCare apartments.

Veterans benefits

The VA pension with Aid and Attendance may help eligible wartime veterans and surviving spouses. The county veterans service officer can help you apply.

For families

For families

Moving a parent off the farm is a big chapter. Here's how we help.

  1. 01

    Before the move

Rosa makes a floor-plan drawing of your parent's apartment so you can decide what furniture comes, and she has a list of Pratt movers who've done this before.

  2. 02

    The first month

Kayla pairs every new resident with a neighbor for meals and outings. Most families tell us the second week is when things click.

  3. 03

    Staying in touch

Gloria calls after any fall, hospital visit or medication change. You'll get a monthly newsletter and an invitation to every party.

  4. 04

    Visiting

Come any time. Stay for a meal for a few dollars, or book the guest apartment if you're driving in from out of state.
