Memory care · Rockport, Texas

Fifty-one years married, and still holding hands on the seawall.

Aransas Bay is a 40-resident memory care home on the water in Rockport, where couples can stay together, the pier is fenced and the sunset is part of the care plan.

Why couples

When one of you forgets, the other shouldn't have to leave.

Too often, a diagnosis splits a marriage in two. One spouse moves to memory care across town, the other stays home alone, and the visits get harder for both. My parents went through it. After fifty years together, they spent their last two apart.

At Aransas Bay, couples live together. Our companion suites have two bedrooms, one sitting room and a door onto the porch, so the spouse who doesn't need memory care can come and go while the one who does is safe and looked after. Twelve couples live with us now. Some days they walk the seawall at six, the way they did on their honeymoon in Port Aransas.

Letters from our families

When Bill was diagnosed, I thought I'd lose him to a building across town. Instead we moved in together. I still sleep next door to my husband.
Margaret H.Wife of a resident
My parents walk the seawall every evening at six, holding hands. Mom doesn't always know Dad's name, but she always takes his hand.
Susan B.Daughter of residents
Dad was a shrimper for forty years. Noah takes him fishing every Wednesday. He came back last week with a redfish and a sunburn and the biggest grin.
Javier L.Son of a resident
Anita checks on me as much as on my wife. I didn't realize how tired I was until someone asked.
Ray S.Husband of a resident
They threw my parents a sixtieth anniversary party on the porch. Mom wore her corsage all week.
Laura P.Daughter of residents
When Hurricane season came, they had a written plan and called every family before the first storm. I've never felt so prepared.
Greg D.Son of a resident
Thursday date night is my favorite part of the week. My husband pulls out my chair every time.
Dolores R.Wife of a resident
Jasmine noticed Mom's new medicine was making her unsteady and called the doctor that morning.
Kelly M.Daughter of a resident
My grandparents dance every Saturday. Some weeks it's the only time Grandpa hums.
