Our story

Forty-three years on Grand Avenue

Two caregivers helping a patient sit up in bed
A family gathered around a patient's bed
A visitor listening as a patient tells a story on the couch
A volunteer and her therapy dog visiting a patient
A volunteer holding a patient's hand
Chapter 01

A nurse comes home, 1982

Dorothy Reese had seen hospice in Kansas City and came home to Ponca City determined to bring it here. She recruited Dr. Hinkle's father, two ministers and a dozen volunteers.

Chapter 02

Among the first, 1983

When Medicare created its hospice benefit, Arkansas Valley was among the first Oklahoma programs ready to use it. Dorothy filled out the forms on her kitchen table.

Chapter 03

The house on Grand, 1996

We bought an old brick house on Grand Avenue with a big kitchen. The Tuesday grief group has met around that kitchen table ever since.

Chapter 04

The Tree of Lights, 2001

Families asked for a way to remember together at Christmas. Now a tall cedar on Grand Avenue holds a light for every person we've cared for.

Chapter 05

Still independent, today

Chains have offered to buy us more than once. We've always said no. Our board is local, our nurses live here, and the phone still rings to a neighbor.
