Why we keep it small

A nurse with twenty patients remembers every one of them.

Deb Villarreal started Big Country after years as a hospital discharge nurse, sending people home to Tuscola and Buffalo Gap and hoping somebody would check on them. She built the agency she wished she could have called: a nurse with a manageable caseload, a therapist who stays the full hour and an office that picks up the phone.

Twenty-two years later we are forty clinicians strong, and we still cap caseloads. It is why our nurses catch a little ankle swelling on Tuesday instead of an ambulance ride on Friday, and why families tend to call us again when they need us.

My knee replacement was on a Monday. Their therapist was in my den Wednesday morning, and by week three I was back at the Tuesday domino game.

The nurse noticed Mama's ankles were swelling before any of us did. One phone call to her doctor and a pill change, and no trip to the ER.

We live twelve miles out of Baird and they never once rescheduled on us. Not in the rain, not in August.
Darla M.Wife of a patient, Callahan County
My dad served at Dyess for twenty years. The social worker helped us with his VA paperwork on her own time.

I'm a retired nurse and I'm picky. They were better than I would have been.
