Chapter one

A big old house that chose to stay small.

The Brazos House was built in 1924 for a cotton broker and his nine children, which may explain the size of the dining room. Lorena Whitcomb, a nurse who grew up in Hood County, bought it in 2007 and spent a year turning it into sixteen private suites without losing the pocket doors, the pine floors or the porch that wraps two sides of the house.

We could have built more rooms. We decided not to. Sixteen residents is enough for a good dinner conversation and few enough that every caregiver knows every story. Families tell us the house feels like a grandparent's home on a holiday, minus the dishes.

Notes from our families

Mama grew up in a house like this in Lipan. She walked in, put her hand on the porch rail and said, well, this will do. That was four years ago.
Darla M.Daughter of a resident
Lorena is a nurse first. When Dad's medications were fighting each other, she caught it before his doctor did.
Chris H.Son of a resident
Sunday dinner at the Brazos House is the best meal my family eats all week. I am not exaggerating.
Angela P.Granddaughter of a resident
My parents share the companion suite. Fifty-eight years married, and they still argue about the thermostat. The staff just laughs.
Tim R.Son of residents
They took Mom to the matinee at the opera house. She talked about it for a month.
Kathy L.Daughter of a resident
When Dad went on hospice, Marisol came in on her day off to sit with him. That is who works here.
