Residential care · Granbury, Texas
A licensed residential care home in a red-brick house off Bridge Street, where the cook knows your mother's recipes and the caregivers know her stories.
Chapter one
The Brazos House was built in 1924 for a cotton broker and his nine children, which may explain the size of the dining room. Lorena Whitcomb, a nurse who grew up in Hood County, bought it in 2007 and spent a year turning it into sixteen private suites without losing the pocket doors, the pine floors or the porch that wraps two sides of the house.
We could have built more rooms. We decided not to. Sixteen residents is enough for a good dinner conversation and few enough that every caregiver knows every story. Families tell us the house feels like a grandparent's home on a holiday, minus the dishes.

Rooms & suites
Every suite has a private bath with a walk-in shower, a window that opens and room for a favorite chair.

Our most common room: a sunny bedroom with a private bath and space for a bed, a dresser and two chairs.

Four suites open onto the wraparound porch, so morning coffee is one step outside the door.

Two bedrooms sharing a sitting room and bath, for spouses, sisters or friends who want to stay close.

Sample family reviews
Mama grew up in a house like this in Lipan. She walked in, put her hand on the porch rail and said, well, this will do. That was four years ago.
Lorena is a nurse first. When Dad's medications were fighting each other, she caught it before his doctor did.
Sunday dinner at the Brazos House is the best meal my family eats all week. I am not exaggerating.
My parents share the companion suite. Fifty-eight years married, and they still argue about the thermostat. The staff just laughs.
They took Mom to the matinee at the opera house. She talked about it for a month.
When Dad went on hospice, Marisol came in on her day off to sit with him. That is who works here.
For families
The practical things, plainly answered.
Come any time. The front door is unlocked from seven to nine; after that, ring and a caregiver will let you in.
Families are welcome at every meal, and Sunday dinner at one o'clock is the main event.
Lorena or Marisol calls after every doctor visit and any time something changes.
Label clothing with a name. We wash everything here and return it folded.
