Chapter 01 — Off Illinois Avenue, near the fairgrounds, Vinita, OK

Adult day · Off Illinois Avenue, near the fairgrounds, Vinita, OK

Ten good hours, one day at a time.

Cabin Creek is a licensed adult day health center in Vinita, with a second program in Grove. From the 7 a.m. van to the 5 o'clock ride home, members get nursing, therapy, a hot noon dinner and a full day with people who know them.

7:00 a.m.

The van pulls into the driveway, and the day begins.

Ray Proctor drove the first van himself in 2004. His wife Della, a nurse at the hospital in Vinita for twenty-two years, ran everything else. Their son Tyler drives the morning route now, and their daughter Jess is our director of nursing. It's still a family business, and members are treated like family.

Every day follows the same shape, and members like it that way: coffee and the paper, nurse checks, exercise, a hot noon dinner, an afternoon of whatever they love best, and a snack before the van. Families get a note at pickup about how the day went. On the following pages, we'll walk you through one.

A good day isn't complicated: somebody glad to see you, something to do with your hands, a hot meal, a laugh, and a ride home before dark.
