Our story

How we got here

The people, the place and the promise behind every day of care.

Our story

How a hay field became home

Friends sharing burgers and iced tea, one in her wheelchair at the end of the table
A couple at the overlook, red rock canyon walls stretching out below
Open grassland glowing gold at sunset
A spring storm and lightning over a wheat field and a dirt road
A lone tree beside a dirt road under an evening sky
Chapter 01

A hay field and a promise

In 2009 a Canyon family who had driven their own mother to Amarillo every week for her care bought eleven acres of hay field on Rim Rock Road. They wanted a place close to home, with big windows, where nobody had to leave town to be looked after.

Chapter 02

Built for the wind

The builder from Hereford had one rule: every apartment faces something worth looking at. The patios are tucked behind brick walls, because the wind out here has opinions, and the porches face east, away from the worst of it.

Chapter 03

Opening day, 2012

Rosa Delgado was the first caregiver hired and is still on the day shift. The first residents were a retired rancher, a schoolteacher and a pastor's widow who organized the domino table before the paint dried.

Chapter 04

The Thursday van

It started when a resident said she'd lived in Canyon all her life and hadn't seen the canyon in twenty years. The next Thursday, Rick drove her out. Now it is a standing reservation, rain or shine, and the van is always full.

Chapter 05

Still local, still listening

Canyon Rim is still owned by a Panhandle family. Darnell answers his own phone. And the menu, the calendar and the van schedule are all decided at a monthly residents' meeting with coffee and very strong opinions.
