How we got here

Bernadette's mother needed somewhere to go.

In 2009 Bernadette Hollins was a nurse at the medical center and her mother, Lucille, was living alone on Mellor Park Avenue with early Alzheimer's. Lucille was safe at night with family, but the days were long and getting dangerous. There was nowhere in town to take her.

So Bernadette and her husband bought the empty bank building on Cedar Street, kept the marble, the vault door and the coffered ceiling, and opened a day center for Lucille and eleven of her friends. Lucille lived to ninety-one and came every weekday. Forty-some members come now.

Our story

From a bank to a day center

Bernadette's mother was a third-grade teacher for thirty-four years. At seventy-nine, living alone with early Alzheimer's, she started leaving the stove on. There was no day program in town. That was the beginning.
