Chapter one

A town that built grand things deserved a grand place to grow old.

Ponca City was built by people who thought big: the mansions on Grand Avenue, the Pioneer Woman on her pedestal, a refinery that ran for a hundred years. In 1961 a handful of refinery retirees and their wives decided the town deserved one more thing: a place where its people could grow old without leaving. They bought a hill above the lake and planted the first hundred redbuds.

Sixty-some years later, Eastmoor Hills has cottages and apartments, assisted living, memory care and a skilled nursing center, all connected by garden walks and covered breezeways. The redbuds still bloom in April. The Thursday supper club still meets. And the care is still local, with people who grew up a few miles away.
