Rooted here

A care home that still grows its own tomatoes.

Lena Brockman was a home health nurse in Garvin County for twenty years. Walt farmed peanuts and wheat east of town. When Lena's patients kept telling her the hardest part of getting older was losing their gardens, the Brockmans turned their homestead into Goldenrod House: sixteen suites, a glass greenhouse, raised beds at wheelchair height and an acre of sunflowers along the drive.

The care is what you would expect from a nurse who has driven every county road: careful, unhurried and personal. The rest is what nobody expects. Residents start seeds in February, pick tomatoes in July and sit on the long porch in September watching the sunflowers turn their heads.

Dad farmed for sixty years. Walt handed him a flat of tomato seedlings the first morning and he has not stopped talking about yields since.

Our story

From homestead to Goldenrod House

For twenty years Lena Brockman drove Garvin County as a home health nurse. Her patients kept telling her the same thing: the hardest part was losing the garden.

Read our story

Most of our residents spent their lives working the land or feeding the people who did. We think the last years should still have something growing in them. So we planted a garden big enough for everyone, built the care around it, and let the seasons set the calendar.
