Adult day health · Fairmount, Fort Worth

A full day for them. A working day for you.

Iris House is a licensed adult day health center in a 1912 house on Hurley Avenue. Two nurses on the floor, therapy on site, a real lunch, and a van that runs from seven to six.

  • 2nurses on the floor every day
  • 7a–6pfor families with a shift to cover
  • 4:1members to staff, all day

01 · The house

Big porch, wide halls, and a nurse's station where the dining room used to be.

We bought the house in 2008 because it already felt like a place people would want to spend the day: tall windows, a deep porch, a garden with room for raised beds. Then we widened every doorway, added a shower room and a quiet room, and moved the nurses into the middle of everything.

Our members are retired machinists and church secretaries, veterans and grandmothers who still cook for twelve. Some live with dementia, some are recovering from a stroke, some are simply too alone at home. All of them get the same thing here: a full day, with people who notice.

Notes from member families

My father was a machinist at the plant for thirty-four years. He still builds things at Iris House, birdhouses mostly. He comes home with sawdust on his shirt and a story.

I am a nurse, and I am picky. They caught a urinary infection in my mother before I did. That is what made me trust them.
Patricia L.Daughter of a member
Abuela speaks mostly Spanish. Two of the aides do too, and the cook makes caldo on cold days. She feels like a guest, not a patient.
Marisol G.Granddaughter of a member
The seven o'clock van is the only reason I kept my job at the hospital. It has never once been late.

My mother sings alto in the Iris House singers. She has a concert in December and has asked me to buy a new blouse.
