Good to know
Questions, answered
What is assisted living, exactly?
Your own apartment plus help with the daily things that have gotten hard: bathing, dressing, medications, meals. It is not a nursing home; there is a nurse on site, but residents do not need round-the-clock skilled nursing.
How much does Ladd Manor cost?
Monthly rent depends on the apartment, and a care level is added after our nurse's assessment. Marisol will give you both numbers in writing at your tour.
Does Medicare pay for assisted living?
No. Medicare does not cover rent or personal care in assisted living, though it still covers doctor visits, therapy and home health visits you receive here.
Does KanCare help?
KanCare, Kansas's Medicaid program, can help pay for care services in assisted living through its Frail Elderly waiver for residents who qualify. It does not cover rent. We have a limited number of apartments for waiver residents; ask us about openings.
Can veterans get help paying?
Wartime veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for the VA's Aid and Attendance pension. We can point you to a county veterans service officer who helps with the application.
Is there a nurse on site?
A licensed nurse is in the house seven days a week, and our director of health services is on call nights. Caregivers are awake and on the floor all night.
Can I bring my own furniture?
Please do. We provide the apartment empty unless you ask for it furnished. Most people bring a bed, a favorite chair, a dresser and their pictures.
Can couples live together?
Yes. Several of our garden wing one-bedrooms are home to couples, including some where only one spouse needs care.
Are pets allowed?
Cats and small dogs are welcome in the garden wing if you can care for them. Our house cat, Pickles, lives in the parlor.
What happens if my care needs change?
Our nurse reassesses at least every six months and any time something changes. Many needs can be met here; if someone needs skilled nursing, we help the family find the right place.
Is the old house accessible?
Yes. An elevator serves both floors of the house, the porch has a ramp on the garden side, and every bathroom has grab bars and a walk-in shower.
Can I keep my own doctor?
Yes. Our van takes you to appointments in Independence, or you can see our visiting physician here once a month.
Can I still drive?
If you are safe to drive, yes. Residents with cars have reserved spots by the garden wing.
What about church?
Thursday chapel is held in the house, and our van runs to several churches in town on Sunday mornings.
Can family stay for a meal?
Any meal, with a day's notice for Sunday dinner. Guest meals are a few dollars and charged to the apartment.
Is there a waiting list?
Sometimes, especially for house apartments. A refundable deposit holds your place, and we call as soon as the right apartment opens.

There is a chair in the parlor with your name on it.
Call or text Claire to set a time. If you come at four, the tea is already poured.
