Two friends laughing together at the picnic table in the cottage garden

Adult day program · Siloam Springs, Arkansas

A garden, a good lunch and a friend at every table.

Lilac Lane is an adult day program in a 1910 cottage and garden a block from Sager Creek: a nurse on site, lunch from our kitchen, flowers from our beds and a van home before supper.

Our cottage

Margaret planted the lilacs before she ever opened the door.

Margaret Ellery was a home health nurse in Benton County for twenty years. Again and again she met women and men who were safe enough at home but lonely all day, and families wearing themselves thin trying to fill the hours. In 2012 she bought the old Patterson cottage on Lilac Lane, planted sixty lilac bushes along the fence and spent a year making the house ready.

Today the cottage is full of retired schoolteachers and college professors, a former florist, a few farmers and one very opinionated retired pharmacist. They come for the garden, the company and the lunch. Their families send them because a nurse is in the house every hour and nobody is ever left on their own.

Notes from our families

Mother taught home economics for thirty years. She's been put in charge of the Tuesday chicken salad, and she takes it very seriously.
Ellen R.Daughter of a member
My wife was a florist. She can't always find words now, but she can still make an arrangement that stops you in the doorway.
Harold W.Husband of a member
Margaret called me because Dad seemed off after lunch. It was a low blood sugar, caught right there, before anything happened.
Brian T.Son of a member
The handwritten note in his pocket every afternoon is the best part of my day. Some days it's two lines, some days it's a whole page.
Teresa M.Daughter of a member
I drive in from Fayetteville. Knowing Mama is in a garden instead of alone in her kitchen lets me breathe.
Deborah P.Daughter of a member
Grandma brought home a watercolor of the lilacs. It's framed in our hallway now.
Olivia S.Granddaughter of a member
My father is a retired pharmacist and corrects the nurses on drug names. They thank him every time.
Kevin L.Son of a member
It's the gentlest place I've ever walked into.

Our story

How the cottage came to be

Margaret spent twenty years driving the back roads of Benton County as a home health nurse. She kept meeting people who didn't need a nursing home, just company and someone paying attention.
