Chapter 01

The nurse

Margaret spent twenty years driving the back roads of Benton County as a home health nurse. She kept meeting people who didn't need a nursing home, just company and someone paying attention.

The cottage

The Patterson cottage on Lilac Lane had been for sale for three years when Margaret bought it in 2012. She added a ramp, an elevator and a bath suite, and kept the bay window, the pine floors and the porch.

Chapter 03

The lilacs

She planted sixty lilac bushes along the fence the first spring, before a single member walked through the gate. Now the Lilac Festival party in April is the biggest day of our year.
