Three generations gathered at the old wooden door of Hargrave House

Est. 1949 · Fort Scott, Kansas

Seventy-six years of looking after our own.

Limestone cottages, apartments and every level of care on a shaded bluff above the Marmaton River, run by the same hometown board since Truman.

A hometown institution

Built from Fort Scott limestone and Fort Scott promises.

In 1949, with the war over and the town's parents getting older, a group of Fort Scott families bought the old Hargrave house on the Marmaton bluff and opened it as a home for twelve. They quarried the limestone for the first addition from a farm on Highway 69. The cornerstone is still by the front door.

Today Marmaton Hall is cottages and apartments, assisted living, memory care and a skilled nursing center, all on twenty-two acres of oaks above the river. The same not-for-profit board still meets in the same parlor. Families who placed a grandmother here in 1960 now tour us for themselves.

Letters from our families

My grandmother lived in Hargrave House in 1962. My mother lived in the east wing. I moved into a cottage last spring. The parlor smells exactly the same.

When Daddy moved to Cornerstone House, Mama walked over every morning with his newspaper. He couldn't read it anymore. She read it to him.

Sunday fried chicken, then vespers, then a nap on the porch. I've had worse Sundays.
