Why veterans

Dementia can take a person back to the hardest days. We know what that looks like.

I spent twenty-six years as an Army nurse, the last six at the hospital on post. When I retired, I kept meeting the same families: a sergeant major with Alzheimer's who stood at attention at every doorway, a Vietnam veteran who woke at three every morning sure he was back on watch, a war bride who only spoke German at night.

Medicine Bluff is built for them. Our caregivers are trained in dementia and in the combat stress that can surface with it. We fly the flag every morning, play the songs they marched to, and know how to say 'You're relieved, soldier, you can sleep now' in a way that works. Our business office helps every eligible family apply for VA benefits, and we never rush the paperwork.

From military families

Dad was a drill sergeant at Fort Sill for nine years. They let him call cadence on the walking path. He hasn't been this happy since before the diagnosis.
Rebecca T.Daughter of a resident
My husband woke every night at three, sure he was in Da Nang. Tasha sits with him until he settles. She was a medic; she knows.
Linda W.Wife of a resident
Kiana got Mom's Aid and Attendance approved in four months. We'd been stuck for a year on our own.
Marcus J.Son of a resident
I'm stationed in Germany. Every Sunday they set up a video call and Dad salutes me through the screen.
SSG Kyle R.Grandson of a resident
Mother was a war bride from Bavaria. A caregiver here learned a German lullaby for her. I don't know how to thank her.
Helen S.Daughter of a resident
His shadow box hangs by his door: Bronze Star, unit patch, wedding photo. He stops and looks at it every time he walks by.
Diane M.Wife of a resident
Veterans Day they took six residents to the parade downtown. Dad wore his VFW cap and saluted every flag that went by.
Anthony G.Son of a resident
Colonel Harlan returned my call on a Sunday night. That's the kind of place this is.
Brenda K.Daughter of a resident
Chaplain Odom sat with Granddad the night he passed. We couldn't get there in time, and he wasn't alone. That means everything.
