Questions Abilene families ask
What's the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?
Assisted living is for people who need help with daily things like bathing, dressing or medications but don't need a nurse at the bedside around the clock. Residents have their own apartment and come and go as they please. If someone needs 24-hour skilled nursing, we'll help the family find the right place.
How much does it cost?
Rent depends on the apartment size, and personal care is priced in levels after our wellness nurse visits with you. We give every family a one-page price sheet at the first tour, so you can compare us side by side with anyone.
Does Medicare pay for assisted living?
No. Medicare doesn't cover room and board in assisted living. Most families pay privately, and many use long-term care insurance or the VA Aid & Attendance pension. In Texas, the STAR+PLUS Medicaid waiver may help with care costs for people who qualify; our business office can tell you more.
Can Mom bring her furniture and her cat?
Yes to the furniture, and usually yes to the cat. Small pets are welcome when the resident can care for them, or with a little help from family.
Can she still drive?
If she's safe to drive and has her license, she's welcome to keep her car in our lot. Plenty of residents drive themselves to church on Sunday and ride our bus the rest of the week.
Do you take short stays?
When an apartment is open, yes. Respite stays of a week or a month are a good way to recover after a hospital stay or to give a family caregiver a breather.
