Good to know

Questions, answered

What is assisted living?

Your own apartment, meals, housekeeping and activities, plus hands-on help with bathing, dressing, medications and getting around, from staff who are here around the clock. It is not a nursing home and does not provide 24-hour skilled nursing.

How much does it cost?

Rent depends on the apartment, and a care level is added after our nurse's assessment. Gwen will give you both numbers in writing at your tour.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

No. Medicare does not pay for rent or personal care in assisted living. It still covers doctor visits, therapy and home health services you receive here.

Does Texas Medicaid help?

Texas Medicaid's STAR+PLUS program can help pay for assisted living services, though not room and board, for people who qualify, in participating communities. Ask us about current openings.

Can veterans get help paying?

Wartime veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for the VA's Aid and Attendance pension. Karin can connect you with a veterans service officer.

Who is here at night?

Three caregivers are awake all night, led by an LVN supervisor, and our director of nursing is on call.

Do I have to go to the evening programs?

Not at all. Some residents come every night; some like a quiet apartment and a book. Both are fine.

Can I go to bed late?

Yes. Bedtime is yours. Our evening and night caregivers plan help around when you actually go to bed.

Can I keep my own doctor?

Yes. Our van goes to appointments in Fredericksburg and Kerrville, or you can see our medical director here.

Can couples live together?

Yes, in one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, including when only one spouse needs care.

Are pets allowed?

Cats and small dogs are welcome in the east wing if you can care for them.

Can family stay for supper?

Any night. Guest suppers are charged to the apartment, and the long table seats twelve.

Is the stone house accessible?

Yes. The 1868 house has an elevator, a level porch entrance and walk-in showers in every bath.

What happens if care needs change?

Our nurse reassesses every six months and any time something changes. If someone needs skilled nursing or memory care, we help the family plan the next step.

Can I bring my own furniture?

Please do. We send a floor plan, and maintenance hangs pictures and wires lamps on move-in day.

Is there an entrance fee?

No. There is a one-time community fee, then month-to-month rent and care.

Can I try it first?

Yes. Trial stays of one or two weeks in a furnished apartment are the best way to see the evenings for yourself.

How do evening tours work?

Thursday through Saturday at seven. You'll see the parlor on a music night and can stay for coffee and strudel afterward.

Stay for supper. Stay for the first song.

Call or text Gwen to set an evening tour, Thursday through Saturday at seven.
