The quilting circle
In 2000 the women of a church quilting circle kept hearing the same story at the frames: a mother or father who was fine at night with family but lonely and unsafe alone during the day.

Our story
A quilting circle, a nurse and a hardware store that found a second life.
Our story

In 2000 the women of a church quilting circle kept hearing the same story at the frames: a mother or father who was fine at night with family but lonely and unsafe alone during the day.

They raised the money for a building and asked Ruth Unruh, a home health nurse who had cared for half of their parents, to run it. She said yes on one condition: a nurse on the floor every hour the doors are open.

Sunflower opened in 2001 in the old hardware store on North Main with nineteen members. The tin ceiling stayed. The paint department became the quilting room.

We added therapy in 2009, the memory care neighborhood in 2014, Saturday respite in 2017 and a second van in 2019, each time because families asked.

Sixty-some members come on a busy day. Many of the founding quilters' grandchildren are members' families now. The comforters still go to the relief sale every April.
