Assisted living · Fayetteville, Arkansas
Thirty-eight apartments in a restored 1928 brick house on the slope of Mount Sequoyah, with caregivers awake through the night, a piano in the parlor and a wine hour that starts at five.
A house with a history
The Whitlock went up in 1928 as a boarding house for university faculty, and for decades the lights in its parlor burned late. When we restored it in 2017 we kept the oak floors, the leaded windows and the habit of staying up. The library is never locked. The piano is never closed.
Behind the old walls is everything an assisted living residence should have now: a licensed nurse on staff, caregivers awake all night, an elevator to every floor and call pendants in every apartment. Help is close. It just doesn't announce itself.

Rooms & suites
Every apartment has its own bath, a kitchenette and windows that open. Many still have the original oak trim.

A separate bedroom and a sitting room big enough for your own sofa, desk and the good lamp.

Our largest apartments, on the corners of the house, with two rooms of windows and space for a couple.

My father taught history at the university for thirty-one years. At The Whitlock he gives the Thursday talk twice a year and gets more questions than he ever did in class.
I toured four places in the daytime. I toured this one at seven on a Thursday, and the parlor was full. That told me everything.
Mother has never slept well. Tomás brings her tea at two and sits with her for a few minutes. She calls him her night watchman.
The food is better than the restaurants on Dickson, and I am including the ones my husband and I used to go to.
Renée called me within an hour of Dad's fall, had already spoken to his doctor and had a therapist booked for the next morning.
It doesn't feel like a facility. It feels like a very good old hotel where everyone happens to know your name.
They told us the full cost in writing on our first visit and it has matched every bill since.
