Chapter 01A hotel man's mother
In 2011 Desmond Alcott spent six months touring senior living for his mother. Everything was clean and kind and none of it felt like her. She had spent her life dressing for dinner. He went back to the hotel group he worked for with a sketch of a different kind of place.
Chapter 02Wall Street, Grapevine
The lot two blocks off Main Street had been a lumber yard. The town wanted something that would bring people downtown in the evening, and a building full of residents who like supper and a show turned out to be exactly that.
Chapter 03Opening night
Vineyard Hall opened in October 2014, during GrapeFest week. Forty-one residents moved in that first month. The pianist we hired for opening night still plays the lobby on Fridays.
Chapter 04The third floor
By 2017 residents were asking what happens when they need more help. We licensed the third floor for assisted living, hired Lorraine Pham to lead it and kept the same dining room, the same cellar and the same friends.
Chapter 05The cellar
The residents' cellar began with a donated case from a Main Street tasting room. Today it holds about three hundred and forty bottles, a good many of them chosen by the residents' own wine committee.
Chapter 06What we promise
Linen on the table, the truth about costs and a nurse who answers at three in the morning. We still dim the lights at seven, and we still think growing older should feel like an evening out.
