Chapter 01 — Northwest Oklahoma, Woodward, OK
Hospice · Woodward & the northwest plains
Hospice nurses, aides, chaplains and social workers who cover six counties and three hundred miles of section-line roads, so families on the plains can keep their people at home.
Chapter one
In northwest Oklahoma, the nearest hospital can be an hour away and the nearest neighbor a mile. When someone is dying at home on a wheat farm near Buffalo or a ranch outside Arnett, families worry most about being alone with it.
So we built a hospice around distance: nurses who live in the outlying towns, an emergency comfort kit left at every home, a phone that rings to a real nurse at any hour, and a team that will drive an hour each way without a second thought.
— Jolene Harrell, RN, CHPN, Executive Director

Where we care
Same team, same benefit, wherever someone calls home.

Most patients stay in their own bed. We bring the equipment, medicines and team, however long the drive.

An apartment in Woodward or a house in Shattuck, the care is the same.

We add hospice nursing, aides, chaplain and social work to the care already in place.

We work alongside nursing home staff on comfort. Room and board is billed separately.

We're forty minutes from Woodward on a dirt road. Cody came at 3 a.m. in an ice storm. I'll never forget his headlights coming over the hill.
The comfort kit in the fridge saved us. When Dad's breathing changed, the nurse talked me through it on the phone while she drove out.
Dad wanted to see one more harvest. The team planned his visits around it, and we parked his wheelchair at the edge of the field to watch the combines.
Mike helped us figure out what to do with the cattle and the lease. That was weighing on Mom more than anything.
Pastor Ruth sat with Grandma every week and sang the German hymns she grew up with. Grandma knew every word.
Lupe spoke Spanish with my mother and braided her hair. Mom looked forward to her all week.
Dr. Weatherford did video visits when the roads were bad and came in person when it mattered. He was always there.
A year later, the nurse came by during harvest just to check on me. That's when I needed it.
For families
Out here, families do most of the caregiving. Here's how we help.
Call any time and a nurse answers, then drives out if needed.
Medicines and written instructions for the nights when we're still on the road.
A nurse can see and talk with you between visits when roads are bad.
Our nurses gently explain the changes near the end, ahead of time.
