Chapter 01 — Northwest Oklahoma, Woodward, OK

Hospice · Woodward & the northwest plains

Out here, nobody walks this road alone.

Hospice nurses, aides, chaplains and social workers who cover six counties and three hundred miles of section-line roads, so families on the plains can keep their people at home.

Chapter one

Distance is the first thing we solve.

In northwest Oklahoma, the nearest hospital can be an hour away and the nearest neighbor a mile. When someone is dying at home on a wheat farm near Buffalo or a ranch outside Arnett, families worry most about being alone with it.

So we built a hospice around distance: nurses who live in the outlying towns, an emergency comfort kit left at every home, a phone that rings to a real nurse at any hour, and a team that will drive an hour each way without a second thought.

Our story

Twenty-eight years on the plains

Jolene's mentor, a public-health nurse named Marlene Boese, started Boiling Springs Hospice with one station wagon and a car phone. She put four hundred miles on it the first week.
