Our story

Gretchen grew up in a house where everything stopped at three for coffee and cake. Her Oma said it was the most important appointment of the day.
As a home health nurse, Gretchen walked into kitchens all over Comal County where that ritual had disappeared. No cake, no company, nobody to sit down with.
In 2008 she opened Comal Street in an old dry-goods store two blocks off the plaza, with a nurse, a cook and a very large coffee urn.
By 2014 members had traded so many recipes that we printed them. The Comal Street cookbook is in its third edition.
In 2019 families in Hays County asked for a club of their own. We opened in a storefront near the square, with the same nurses, recipes and three o'clock.
Fifty-eight members across two clubs. Every afternoon, in both, the whole room stops for coffee.
