Our story

How we got here

The people, the place and the promise behind every day of care.

Our story

The Grayson House, from the beginning

A lively hand of cards
Two friends laughing on the sofa
A resident at the parlor piano
A resident playing guitar with his wife
A resident reading the paper
A resident with a history book in the library
Chapter 01

The Pritchett house

Built in 1912 for a cotton merchant, the three-story brick house on Grand Avenue had been a boarding house, a law office and, for ten years, empty.

Chapter 02

A professor and a nurse

Charles taught history at the college; Naomi nursed at the hospital. They had cared for both of their mothers and knew exactly what they wanted for their own old age.

Chapter 03

A year behind the plaster

In 2003 they added an elevator, sprinklers, sixteen private baths and wide doorways, and kept the pine floors, the staircase and the porch.

Chapter 04

Opening day

The first residents moved in during the spring of 2004. One of them was Charles's old department chair, who still corrected his grammar.

Chapter 05

The college connection

Students began visiting to read aloud and practice recitals. Twenty years later the volunteer list has more than a hundred names.

Chapter 06

Still sixteen

We have been asked to expand. We have stayed at sixteen, so every caregiver knows every resident and the parlor always has a free chair.
