The house on Grand

We restored the house, then filled it with neighbors.

Charles Whitfield taught history at the college for thirty years; Naomi was a nurse at the hospital across town. In 2003 they bought the old Pritchett house on Grand Avenue, a three-story brick place with a wraparound porch and twelve-foot ceilings, and spent a year turning it into sixteen private suites with an elevator and every modern safety feature they could fit behind the plaster.

The Grayson House opened in 2004. It still feels like the house of a family that loves company. College students come to read and play music, the church ladies bring pie, and the front parlor is rarely empty. The care underneath it is steady, careful and led by a nurse.

Dad taught at the college with Charles. Now they argue about the Civil War on the porch every evening.

The college kids who visit have become like grandchildren to Mom. One of them sent her a postcard from Spain.

Naomi caught Mother's pneumonia early. She was on antibiotics before I even knew she was sick.

The house is beautiful, but what you notice is the noise: people laughing, a piano, somebody calling forty-two dominoes.

Ana handled the VA paperwork start to finish. I could not have done it alone.

My grandparents share the couple's suite. They still hold hands at breakfast.

Our story

The Grayson House, from the beginning

Built in 1912 for a cotton merchant, the three-story brick house on Grand Avenue had been a boarding house, a law office and, for ten years, empty.

Read our story

A care home should be a place people want to visit, not just a place people live. So we keep the doors open, the coffee on and the calendar full, and we hire caregivers who like a full house as much as we do.
