Chapter 01

The stroke

In 2006 Ramona's father, a dairyman named Ernesto, had a stroke at seventy-eight. He could walk with a cane and he could still argue, but he couldn't be alone on the farm all day, and the nearest day program was eighty miles away.

Chapter 02

The feed store

The old feed store on Belknap had been empty for six years. Ramona leased it, poured a new floor, kept the rafters and the loading dock, and opened in 2007 with her father and eight of his friends.

Chapter 03

The county showed up

Churches sent volunteers, the high school ag shop built the first workbench, and Tarleton nursing students started doing clinicals here in 2010. They still do.
