  • 52members on a busy day
  • 2nurses on the floor

01 · How it started

A dairy farmer's daughter, a nurse, and an empty feed store.

Ramona Villarreal grew up on a dairy outside Dublin and spent twenty years as a nurse at the hospital in town. When her father had a stroke in 2006, he couldn't stay alone on the farm and he wouldn't hear of a nursing home. The nearest day program was in Fort Worth.

So she leased the old feed store on Belknap, poured a new floor, hired two nurses and a cook from her church, and opened in 2007 with her father and eight of his friends. Today fifty-some members come through: cattlemen and dairymen, teachers from Tarleton, mechanics and church pianists, all of them with a seat at the table.

In their words

Daddy ran cattle for sixty years and he'd have run off any sitter we hired. At Green Creek he reads the farm report out loud every morning. He has a job.

Our story

Four chapters

In 2006 Ramona's father, a dairyman named Ernesto, had a stroke at seventy-eight. He could walk with a cane and he could still argue, but he couldn't be alone on the farm all day, and the nearest day program was eighty miles away.
