Questions about a rehab stay

How long is a typical rehab stay?

Most of our patients go home in two to three weeks. Your case manager sets a target date in the first 48 hours and updates it as you progress.

Does Medicare pay for rehab?

Medicare Part A can cover skilled nursing and rehab after a qualifying inpatient hospital stay of at least three days. The first 20 days are covered in full, then a daily coinsurance applies through day 100 while you still need skilled care.

Do you accept TRICARE for Life?

Yes. TRICARE for Life works alongside Medicare for eligible military retirees, and our case manager coordinates both.

What about Medicare Advantage?

We work with most Medicare Advantage plans. Many require prior approval, which our admissions team handles with the hospital.

Can I choose North Fork before my surgery?

Yes, and we encourage it. Tour ahead and tell your surgeon and the hospital case manager.

How much therapy will I get?

Most patients have physical, occupational or speech therapy five to six days a week, according to their plan of care.

Is every suite private?

Yes. All 52 rehab suites are private, with private baths.

Can my family visit?

Any time. We encourage family to join a therapy session or two.

What should I bring?

Comfortable exercise clothes, supportive shoes with backs, toiletries, glasses, hearing aids and your medication list.

Will I see a doctor?

Yes. Our medical director and nurse practitioners see patients several times a week and keep your own doctors informed.

Do you handle IV antibiotics?

Yes, along with IV fluids and PICC line care.

What if I can't go home safely?

We'll talk early with you and your family about home health, assisted living or long-term care on our skilled nursing hall.

Do you help veterans?

Yes. We coordinate with the VA and with TRICARE, and many of our staff are veterans or military family.

What's the truck-cab trainer?

A real pickup cab mounted in our gym. You practice getting in and out safely before you ride home.

Will someone help after I go home?

We arrange home health or outpatient therapy, order equipment and call within 48 hours of discharge.

Do you have long-term care?

Yes, on a separate hall, with Medicaid and private pay accepted.

How do I get admitted?

Tell your hospital case manager you'd like North Fork, or call our admissions line seven days a week.

Tell the hospital you want North Fork.

You have the right to choose where you recover. Tell your hospital case manager, or call our admissions team any day of the week.
