The red brick Old Main hall with arched windows and chimneys, framed by shade trees

Retirement living on College Hill · Arkadelphia, Arkansas

Same front steps since 1961. New everything behind them.

Sixty-four apartments in a restored brick college hall, a dining room with tablecloths and a front porch that has heard sixty years of good stories.

Est. 1961

A hometown institution, and proud of it.

Old Main was built in 1894 to hold classrooms. In 1961 a group of retired schoolteachers and three downtown churches pooled their money, bought the empty hall and turned it into a place to grow old among friends. Arkadelphia has been sending its parents, aunts and favorite teachers up the front steps ever since.

We finished a top-to-bottom renovation in 2019: elevators, walk-in showers, central air and wiring that can handle a microwave. We kept the heart-pine floors, the brass mail slots and the bell in the cupola, which still rings at noon on Sundays.

Letters to the front desk

My grandmother lived at Old Main in the seventies. Now my mother is in the same wing, two doors down. The floors still creak in the same spot, and that made us both cry a little on move-in day.
Karen D.Daughter of a resident
I taught fourth grade for thirty-one years. Half the staff here were my students, and they still won't call me by my first name.
Mrs. Eloise G.Resident since 2017
Dad had been eating cereal for supper since Mom passed. Now he has a regular table, two meals a day and opinions about the cobbler.
Brian T.Son of a resident
The lecture series is the best thing in town. Last month a geology professor brought rocks from DeGray and let us pass them around.
Howard P.Resident since 2020
When Mother fell in her apartment, the pendant worked, the desk called me in four minutes, and Danielle rode with her to the hospital. I won't forget that.
Sharon L.Daughter of a resident
We moved from a three-bedroom house to a garden cottage. We kept the dog and the tomato plants and lost the lawn mower.
Bill and Nita R.Residents since 2021
Claire measured my mother's dining table and found the one apartment it would fit in. That's the kind of help I didn't know to ask for.
Patrice W.Daughter of a resident
I came for the dining room and stayed for the porch. Somebody is always out there by four o'clock.

Insurance & payment

Paying for life at Old Main

Independent living is usually paid privately. Here are the ways our residents and their families make it work.

Private pay

One monthly fee. No entrance fee, no buy-in and a written list of every charge.

Long-term care insurance

Some policies help with home care services you might add later. We'll help with the paperwork.

VA Aid & Attendance

Eligible veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for a monthly pension that can help with care costs.

Selling the house

Many residents use the proceeds of a home sale. We keep a list of local realtors and estate-sale companies who know what they're doing.
