Our story

Old Main opened as a two-story hall of classrooms with a bell in the cupola. For sixty years, the town's children climbed the same front steps our residents climb today.

When the school moved to a new building, a group of retired teachers asked a simple question: why not live here together? Three downtown churches agreed to help, and the first twenty-two residents moved in that fall.

We added the dining wing, the porch and the first garden cottages. The Sunday dinner tradition started in 1974, when a resident's son asked if he could stay for pot roast.

Elevators, sprinklers, central air and walk-in showers went in. The heart-pine floors, brass mail slots and the bell stayed. Residents voted on every paint color, and it took four meetings.
