Our story

How we got here

Two nurses, a garden and the decision to stay small.

Our story

Twenty-three years by the river

A caregiver and patient talking over coffee
A caregiver's hand on a patient's forehead
Two caregivers settling a patient in bed
A woman writing in her journal at the garden table
A nurse checking on a patient resting
Chapter 01

Two nurses, 2002

Anne Whitaker and a fellow oncology nurse left Fort Worth to start a hospice where they could give every family time. They rented two rooms above a shop on Barnard Street.

Chapter 02

The decision to stay small

In 2009, a regional chain offered to buy us. We said no, and capped caseloads instead. It's the most important decision we've made.

Chapter 03

The house and garden, 2014

We moved into a limestone house with a garden. The memorial garden behind it now holds the names of everyone we've cared for.

Chapter 04

Music, 2017

A retired music teacher offered to play harp at bedsides. Now a harpist and a cellist visit patients every week.

Chapter 05

Twenty-three years, today

We're still small on purpose. The river still runs clear over the limestone, and we still come when we're called.
