Why we're open so early

Twelve-hour hitches don't wait for anyone's mother.

Yvette Ramírez spent fourteen years as a nurse in Midland watching the same thing happen: a son on a drilling rig, a daughter on night shift at the hospital, and a parent at home who wasn't safe alone anymore. Every adult day program in town closed at five. Shifts don't.

In 2014 she opened Permian Day Health in an old oil-field supply warehouse on Big Spring Street, with a nurses' station in the middle, a kitchen that cooks three meals, a shower suite, a therapy gym and vans that leave at 5:30 a.m. Today seventy-some members come through on a busy day: retired roughnecks and landmen, teachers, nurses, ranchers and grandmothers who still make the best tamales in West Texas.

Sample family reviews

On the record

I work fourteen and seven on a rig in Reeves County. Permian is the only reason Mama can stay in her own house.
Cody H.Son of a member
I'm a night-shift nurse. I drop Dad at 6:15 on the way home and pick him up after I sleep. He eats three meals there. He's gained back the weight he lost.
Alicia R.Daughter of a member
My husband was a pumper for thirty-five years. He and Earl rebuilt a generator at the shop bench. It runs better than mine.
Darlene P.Wife of a member
Marcus noticed Mom's oxygen was dropping at lunch and called her pulmonologist. She was seen that afternoon.
Brian K.Son of a member
Abuela talks with Lupe in the kitchen every Friday about tamales. It's the happiest she gets all week.
Isabel M.Granddaughter of a member
Saturday program. That's it. That's the review.
Wade T.Son of a member
Priya had Dad walking the track without his walker four months after his stroke.
Sandra L.Daughter of a member
Rosa got Dad's VA benefit approved while I was out on a hitch. I didn't make a single call.
Jesse W.Son of a veteran member
The daily text with a picture of Mom at bingo is the best part of my shift.
Tara S.Daughter of a member
My wife has Alzheimer's and doesn't do well in crowds. The memory care room is quiet and Toni is a saint.
Harold G.Husband of a member
I can work overtime again without lying awake about Dad.
