Adult day health · Galveston Island
A licensed adult day health center six blocks from the seawall. Breakfast at seven, nursing all day, therapy, music and a lift van that covers the island.
Why Seawall
After Hurricane Ike, half the day programs on the island did not reopen. Lourdes Ybarra had run the nursing side of one of them for nine years. In 2011 she found a raised building on Avenue O, put in a generator big enough to keep the lights and the refrigerated medicines on, and opened Seawall with fourteen members.
Today the members are shrimpers and dock workers, retired teachers and nurses, and a few grandmothers who have outlasted every storm since Carla. They come for the breakfast, the dominoes and the company. Families send them because a nurse is here all day and the van shows up on time.

Andre plans the outings, drives the morning route and keeps the domino tournament honest.
Now hiring
Good people make Seawall Day Center. We are hiring for every shift.
Sample family reviews
Daddy shrimped out of Pier 19 for forty years. At Seawall he sits by the window and tells the new guys how it used to be. That's his whole day and he loves it.
Before the last storm, Lourdes called me before I had even thought about it. She already knew Mom's oxygen needs and where we were going to stay.
I work twelves at the hospital. The van is at our door at a quarter to seven. That is the only reason this works.
My husband has Parkinson's. The therapists here kept him walking two years longer than his doctor expected.
My grandmother taught school on the island for thirty years. Half the staff were her students. She grades their handwriting.
