Chapter 01

Winter · The farmhouse

Opal's aunt Della left her the farmhouse on Sylamore Avenue in 2008. That winter Opal and her husband built a ramp, widened the doors and put in a bath room.

Chapter 02

Spring · The first members

Sylamore opened in March 2009 with seven members. Della's best friend Tilly was the first through the door, and she still comes to tell stories.

Chapter 03

Summer · The greenhouse

The extension office, two churches and the high school ag class built the greenhouse in 2010. Members planted the first tomatoes in it that May.

Chapter 04

Fall · The jam

A member's son brought his fiddle one Thursday in 2010. By Christmas half the pickers from the square were coming by. They still do.

Chapter 05

Another winter · The sun porch

In 2016 we glassed in the side porch for members living with dementia: quieter, warmer and full of light.

Chapter 06

Today

Thirty-some members come on a typical day. The greenhouse is heated all winter, and the porch fills up every Thursday at one.
