Our story

The land was a peach orchard for sixty years until a late freeze and a dry decade finished it off. The Behrends family sold it with one condition: keep the oldest pecans standing. We kept every one.

Twelve cottages and a dining room opened in the spring of 2006. The first residents were three retired teachers from Austin, a rancher from Mason and a couple who had honeymooned on Main Street in 1961.

Residents asked for apartments for neighbors who didn't want a yard at all. We built sixty-four, with elevators, balconies and a pool that stays open year-round.

We still have no buy-in, still pour local wine on Thursdays and still pick a few bushels of peaches off the five trees we replanted. Annaliese says that's the whole business plan.
