Chapter 01

A café, a hospital and a father

Celia fed half of Bastrop from her café on Main Street. Ray spent his days helping people breathe at a hospital in Austin. When Ray's father, a retired dance-hall fiddler, needed daily care in 2011, the options felt far away and far too quiet.

Chapter 02

The house on Chestnut Street

They bought a rambling ranch house under a big pecan tree, added a wing of bedrooms and widened every doorway. Ray's father moved in first, with his records and his fiddle. Thirteen neighbors followed within a year.

Chapter 03

Friday afternoons

It started when Ray's dad put on a Bob Wills record and asked a caregiver to dance. Now Friday at three is the busiest hour of the week, and families plan their visits around it.

Chapter 04

Still the same idea

Fourteen residents, a kitchen that cooks from scratch, a team that speaks two languages and stays for years. We are bigger than a family and smaller than a facility, and we like it that way.

  • 14residents, each with a private room
  • 2012the year Ray and Celia opened the doors
  • 300+records in the living room collection
  • 1very spoiled porch cat named Biscuit
